Franz Boaz, Kwakiutl Indians, and the difference a coast makes.


After a half-dozen pilgrimages to an island located between Vancouver Island and the Mainland, east and slightly north of Campbell River, I picked up a few books to understand the first people who inhabited the area.

The social organization of the tribes of the [Pacific NW} coast shows considerable variation. The tribes of the northern parts of the coast have a maternal organization, while those in the south are purely paternally organized. The central tribes, particularly the Kwakiutl, show a peculiar transitional stage.”
